For the first time in fifty years, the government of the United States is lowering the level of fluoride in our water supply. This is a clear win for society and a step in the right direction. However, simply lowering the fluoride in the water is not enough. As you will see in this article, sodium fluoride is very dangerous and needs to be removed from water altogether.
What is Fluoride?
I think a better opening question might be: “what is Fluoride not?”
Dr. Paul Connett, the founder of Fluoride Action Network and the co-author of The Case Against Fluoride, is a man who has researched the studies on fluoride possibly more than anyone else (as seen by anyone who has spent any time on his site). Because of this, he has become a leader in the movement to remove fluoride from the world’s water supply. Last year he wrote an article were he lists 20 undisputed facts about fluoride. The first fact answers the question– what is fluoride not. He states “Fluoride is not a nutrient; no biochemical process in the human body needs fluoride” This is because fluoride is an industrial chemical and the body has no use for any industrial chemical– no matter how many times Big Pharma, Doctors, or The Government tells you otherwise.
However, numerous studies have shown fluoride to be very toxic to different organs in the body, including the brain. There have been 50 studies conducted (as of Feb 2015) on fluoride’s effects of human intelligence. Out of these 50 studies, 43 found that “elevated fluoride exposure is associated with reduced IQ.” These studies examined a total of 11,000 children to come up with this conclusion. Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and China Medical University in Shenyang did a meta-analyst of 27 of these studies and found that an average loss of IQ was 7 points. The studies’ senior author Philippe Grandjean, adjunct professor of environmental health at HSPH, had this to say: “Fluoride seems to fit in with lead, mercury, and other poisons that cause chemical brain drain,” Grandjean says. “The effect of each toxicant may seem small, but the combined damage on a population scale can be serious, especially because the brain power of the next generation is crucial to all of us.”
Another equally disturbing thing that fluoride does inside the brain, is it collects in and calcifies the Pineal Gland.
Like so many other toxins put into our food and water supply, fluoride affects many different organs and diseases. A quick overview of some of these are:
- Thyroid: When someone with iodine deficiencies is also exposed to fluoride, it multiplies the damaging effect on neurological development. British researchers also found that fluorinated water causes hypothyroidism.
- Bones: Fluoride accumulates in our bones and skeletal tissue over time, which lead scientists to believe that fluoride could be used to treat osteoporosis patients to strengthen their bones. But the trails actually found it did the opposite and even causes spontaneous hip fractures!
- Pancreas/Diabetes: The pancreas regulates the body’s insulin, which in turn, regulates the amount of glucose in the blood. Fluoride has been shown to increase the amount out glucose in the blood while lowering the pancreas’ ability to produce insulin, which leads to type 2 diabetes.
- Gastrointestinal: One of the first symptoms of fluoride toxicity is usually having Gastrointestinal problems. Coincidently, during the studies on the osteoporosis patents who were given high doses of fluoride, this was one of the first symptoms to disappear when the treatment stopped.
In the field of biochemistry, Dr. Dean Burk was a pioneer of sorts. He co-discovered Biotin, otherwise know as B-7. His work on photosynthesis won the 1952 Hildebrand Prize. He also received Gerhard Domagk Prize in 1965 for his development of procedures to distinguish the difference between a normal cell and one damaged by cancer. His paper “The Determination of Enzyme Dissociation Constants” is one of the most cited biochemistry papers of all time. He spent 10 years at the USDA from 1929-1939 becoming the senor chemist. After a few years teaching Biochemistry at Cornel, he co-created The National Cancer Institute, were he spent 34 years — many of which, as the institutes head biochemist and the head cytochemistry at the institute’s laboratory. In 1970 he gave an interview on water fluoridation in regards to causing cancer.
In the short six-minute video, he shows a graph from 2 studies exploring cancer death rate of the ten most populated fluoridated cities in the US, compared to the ten most populated un-fluoridated cities. The graph shows that the cancer rates exploded in the ten fluoridated cities immediately after fluoridation was introduced. He goes on to state that if the whole U.S. was to be fluorinated (this was before it did happen) this would equate to 70,000 more cancer deaths– or 1/5 the total cancer deaths in those days!
After this answer, the reporter asks “Now this sure is conclusive evidence that fluoride kills because of cancer?” To which Burk replies “It is one of the most conclusive bits of scientific and biological evidence that I have come across in my 50 years in the field of cancer research.” Later in the interview, he does not mince his word about the water fluoridation project stating: “This you see, amounts to public murder on a grand scale.”
Since this interview, there have been a few studies conducted looking into whether Fluoride is indeed a carcinogenic.
The National Toxicology Program was tasked with this and retained the Battelle Columbus Laboratories to conduct them. They found that mice given fluoride during this 104 week study contracted a rare live cancer called hepatocholangiocarcinoma. Possibly the most disheartening part of the findings was that even the mice that were given very low amounts of the fluoride were also contracting it.
Years ago, when I started looking into the dangers of fluoride, I was not too surprised that it caused this number of “side effects”. I knew that most of the countries in the developed world did not fluorinate their waters and were seeing a decrease in tooth decay. I had already discovered that the U.S. government was not hiding the fact that fluoride was a known toxin. It isn’t surprising considering the warning on tubes of toothpaste about fluoride being toxic. I know I can’t be the only one who got scared as a child reading how if you accidentally swallow the toothpaste, to call poison control. So naturally, when I later on heard they put this same toxin in our water, I was skeptical to say the least.
Luckily not all hope is lost for the United States. As of the year 2014, over 100 communities in the U.S. have opted out of the water fluoridation programs! In my opinion, this war (and make no mistake it is a war) will be won on the local and state level and not on the national level. This is because at the local levels, we actually have a say; unlike the national level where big business is far more influential.
If you are not fortunate enough to live in one of these fluoride-free counties, you will need to do everything you can to get the fluoride out of your house water.. Obviously, the best thing you can do is to get a “whole home” fluoride filtration system, such as these system. The benefits of which, are not only clean drinking water, but clean water to shower/bathe in since the fluoride can still get into your system through skin directly. Unfortunately, all of the “whole home” fluoride filtration systems I have found are pretty expensive ( for those interested in the prices you have a few options: 6- 12 months or something that last longer) and above most people’s price range. I, however, have found a pretty cheap water filter (for drinking water) that filters out all the fluoride and other contaminates, called Zero Water. You have to change the filter about once a month, or all the contaminants will seep back into the water (which is why it comes with a pretty cool digital tester) but overall the price is very reasonable and it’s an easy way to help eliminate fluoride in your life.
Even though we are making steps in the right direction, they are only steps. We have not yet reached our destination, so therefore we should not rest until all fluoride is removed from our water supply.
