In the article Free Country?: The GMO Labeling War I warned about the bill H.R 1599, The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015, proposed by Kansas Republican Congressmen and industry lackey, Mike Pompeo. This bill was first created in 2014 to counter Vermont passing a GMO labeling act by making state level labeling laws illegal. The bill never gained steam and ultimately didn’t pass. However, those of you that are fluent in the political game know that when a big lobby wants something, they won’t stop just because one bill doesn’t get passed. They simply wait a while for the smoke to clear and then change some of the wording of the bill and quietly try to get the “new bill” passed. This is exactly what happened with this bill that gained the nickname the DARK ACT.
Sadly, this time the bill did catch steam and it passed through the House despite the public overwhelmingly desire for GMO labeling. With an average contribution of $72,000 from interest groups to those who voted yes on the bill, it’s no surprise it passed so easily. The bill’s Senate voting date has not been set yet. However, they will most likely want the bill fast tracked. So, we should expect the vote sooner rather than later.
Make no mistake, this bill is extremely treasonous and equally dangerous, for many reasons. First off, the safety of GMO’s is highly questionable and the science behind them is dubious, to say the least. Secondly, how can we live in a “free” society when corporations can hide dangerous substances in food products– especially after the public has demanded to know what they in food products? The fact that the government allows these pesticide-covered foods that have tampered genetics to enter the food supply, is bad enough. However, It is tragic and sickening that the government is also allowing companies to hide it from the public. Lastly, this bill takes the tenth amendment and shreds it. The State’s right to make independent laws insure the voice of the people is more easily heard. Additionally, it was also put into the constitution to prevent the national government from becoming tyrannical, like it is with this bill.
Therefore, it is paramount that we make sure the Senate knows that we will not stand for this bill passing. The Environmental Working Group has made it easy for you. All you have to do is click on this link and fill out some information, after which, you will be able to send their pre-written letter to your Senators directly.
Knowing what is in our food is an undeniable right for anyone living in a truly free society. We must stand up and refuse to allow this right to slip through our fingers, only to let a corrupt and lethal industry protect its bottom line.
