I have been called crazy (or worse) for years for saying the United States is an Oligarchy or a Corporatocracy, not a Republic (that Article 4, Section 4 of the Constitution called for) or even a Democracy (which is what the media has brainwashed a lot of people into believing our government is supposed to be). To me, it doesn’t really take much more to illustrate this than to look at how much the lobbyist in Washington D.C. give out to congressmen or senators of both sides of the part line; or how the biggest companies give out massive amounts of money (in the form of campaign contributions) to both candidates during every Presidential election. It is not logical to think that when hundreds of millions are “donated” by big business to a Politician’s campaign (Obama’s recieved close to the billion dollar mark in total contributions in 2012) that they (the donators) will not have the ear of said Politician. This is why no matter who is elected, Republican or Democrat , nothing really changes and more and more laws are written to protect big business – while hurting us little people.
This is exactly how any form of Oligarchy needs to operate when they need it done covertly. And make no mistake, it needs to be done covertly because the masses are not going to knowingly be ruled by Plutocrats. You need to convince the population that they have the power over that laws are being made.(as in, “if you don’t like the laws or how the country is being ran, vote in a different guy who believes what you believe”). When in reality they (most of the population) have very little power regarding the making of the laws. The whole thing falls apart when people realize the illusion and stop allowing the Plutocracy to rule over them.
There was a recent political science study conducted by two professors from Princeton and Northwestern, that looked at who influenced the changes of nearly 2000 policy changes made from 1981 to 2002 . They did this by looking at what the average American (making up the vast majority of citizens) wanted compared to the wants of the “economic elite” and the special interest and lobbyist groups.
This was their conclusion: “Multivariate analysis indicates that economic elites and organized groups representing business interests, have substantial independent impacts on U.S. government policy. While average citizens and mass-based interest groups have little or no independent influence.”
The “economic elite” were able to achieve this influence on policy changes without most of the public finding out, by consolidating the media outlets to the point that by 2011 6 parent companies owned 90% of the media . It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand when just 6 companies own 90% of newspapers, magazines, radio stations, and TV outlets, the information the population will receive will only be what the owners of said companies want reveled.
The consolidating of corporate power does not just stop there. A few years ago the Swiss Federal Institute released a study called “The Network of Global Corporate Control“. The study used super computers to search a database which lists 37 million corporations and investors (called Orbis 2007) and look for how much interconnectivity the world corporations had with each other. They found that 147 corporations had formed a “super entity” that controls over 40% of the world’s wealth! James Glattfelder, a coauthor of the study, had this to say: “In effect, less than one percent of the companies were able to control 40 percent of the entire network.” Giant banks form the biggest portion of this “super entity”, the most powerful of which are:
- Goldman Sachs
- JPMorgan Chase & Co
- Vanguard Group
- Deutsche Bank
- Bank of New York Melon Corp
- Morgan Stanley
- Bank of America Corp
- Société Générale
The study showed that this “super entity” wields an unbelievable amount of influence and control over the entire financial system. But that is not all they have influence and control over. The small group of people who control this entity are the oligarchs that the two professors talked about in the study I mentioned previously. All you have to do is look at the top contributors to the many PAC’s or to the campaign’s of the Presidential candidates and you will see the companies in this “super entity” at the top of the list.
This is not a new power grab and we have been under the control of this oligarchy for a very long time. Don’t just take my word for it. Many high-ranking politicians, including Presidents, have spoken of this.
I’ll give you a few examples:
“Since I entered politics, I have chiefly had men’s views confided to me privately. Some of the biggest men in the United States, in the Field of commerce and manufacture, are afraid of something. They know that there is a power somewhere so organized, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so complete, so pervasive, that they better not speak above their breath when they speak in condemnation of it.”
-Woodrow Wilson,The New Freedom (1913)
“I am a most unhappy man. I have unwittingly ruined my country. A great industrial nation is controlled by its system of credit. Our system of credit is concentrated. The growth of the nation, therefore, and all our activities are in the hands of a few men. We have come to be one of the worst ruled, one of the most completely controlled and dominated governments in the civilized world. No longer a government by free opinion, no longer a government by conviction and the vote of the majority, but a government by the opinion and duress of a small group of dominant men.”
-Woodrow Wilson (who introduced the Federal Reserve act which allowed the privately owned Federal Reserve to begin in 1913)
“Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people.”
“The real truth of the matter is, as you and I know, that a financial element in the larger centers has owned the Government ever since the days of Andrew Jackson.”
-A letter written by FDR to Colonel House, November 21st, 1933
“The real rulers in Washington are invisible, and exercise power from behind the scenes.”
-Supreme Court Justice, Felix Frankfurter, 1952
“The real menace of our republic is this invisible government which like a giant octopus sprawls its slimy length over city, state and nation. Like the octopus of real life, it operates under cover of a self created screen…. At the head of this octopus are the Rockefeller Standard Oil interests and a small group of powerful banking houses generally referred to as international bankers. The little coterie of powerful international bankers virtually run the United States government for their own selfish purposes. They practically control both political parties.”
-New York City Mayor John F. Hylan, 1922
“Fifty men have run America, and that’s a high figure.”
-Joseph Kennedy, father of JFK, in the July 26th, 1936 issue of The New York Times
“Today the path of total dictatorship in the United States can be laid by strictly legal means, unseen and unheard by the Congress, the President, or the people. Outwardly we have a Constitutional government. We have operating within our government and political system, another body representing another form of government – a bureaucratic elite.”
-Senator William Jenner, 1954
“The case for government by elites is irrefutable”
-Senator William Fulbright, Former chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, stated at a 1963 symposium entitled: The Elite and the Electorate – Is Government by the People Possible?
As you can see, the United States being a Plutocracy is not something that is new. Unfortunately these Plutocrats that run the United States, are internationalist. Therefore, it’s not only happening here, but another articles will have to discuss this.
